Lane student awarded $30,000 transfer scholarship
EUGENE - Alex San Pedro, a second-year art student at Lane Community College, has been awarded a $30,000 transfer scholarship from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation.
San Pedro has been accepted to the Pratt Institute of Design in New York City and will begin his studies there this fall. He overcame childhood abuse, teenage homelessness, and alcoholism to graduate from high school and achieve a 4.0 grade point average at Lane. Rejected by his family at the age of 16, he lived on the streets in San Francisco until he decided to stop drinking and take a job as an outreach worker to help others. He has majored in fine arts, with an emphasis on painting, but also worked in ceramics and as a sculptor.
San Pedro is one of 27 scholarship recipients selected from among 863
nominees at community and two-year colleges across the United States.
Selection criteria included academic excellence, financial need, will
to succeed, leadership ability, service to others, and interest in or
appreciation for the arts.
