Lane scholars meet the governor
EUGENE - Lane Community College students John Butler and Valerie Simmons, both of Eugene, were among 36 student scholars from Oregon's 17 community colleges who were honored by Gov. Ted Kulongoski in a ceremony at the state capitol April 6. Dr. Mary Spilde, president of Lane Community College, attended the event along with other community college leaders.
“It is very affirming to see the caliber of students that benefit from an education at Lane Community College and all the colleges in Oregon,” Spilde said. “These students will go out into the workplace and make a real difference in our lives.”
The students were chosen for outstanding academic achievement and contribution to their community.
Butler is an elementary education major who writes his own software for use in the classroom. He is an active volunteer and mentor, teaching for many after-school enrichment programs. In addition, he is a strong advocate for talented and gifted youth. He has a 4.0 grade point average.
Simmons is a first-generation college student working on an associate
of arts Oregon transfer degree with a major in ethnic studies. She plans
to become a high school counselor. She participates in the Phi Theta Kappa
honor society and the Black Student Union at Lane. She has a 4.0 grade
