Lane diversity coordinator earns human rights award
EUGENE - Jim Garcia, diversity coordinator at Lane since October 2000, received the 2004 Human Rights Leadership Award from the Springfield Alliance for Equality and Respect (SAfER) at its April 1 celebration of the life of Cesar Chavez in Springfield.
Garcia was selected from a variety of nominees, in part for his volunteer efforts to establish a diversity plan in the Springfield school district, SAfER spokesperson Kate Wallace said. She said he has been "absolutely invaluable" in bringing motivation, vision and practicality to the project. Garcia also was recognized for a lifetime of achievement in diversity, volunteerism, teaching and leadership, including helping establish the Ganas programs for Latino youth at Kennedy Middle School in Eugene and at Springfield High. The award is among many he has earned.
Garcia has taught and worked at the University of Oregon, New Mexico State University, Oregon State University, Chemeketa Community College, Portland State University, and Lane. He is a 1977 graduate of the UO. He also is a singer and musician known for performing Corridos, an oral history of the Chicano movement and Mexican American people.
