Groupwise 7 Webmail FAQ
Some users have experienced issues with the new GroupWise 7 Webmail not displaying properly on their work or home computers. It is not displaying properly in some out-of-date browsers and is somewhat slower on home computers with dialup modem connections. Past upgrades have never been a problem, but this one has more sophisticated features that the older browsers have trouble handling. Fortunately, there is a fix for most operating systems. Please see the list below for the recommended browsers to use with Groupwise 7 Webmail, along with some browsers that are not compatible.
30 second delay while logging in. The IT department has contacted Novell and they assure us that this is an issue that all Groupwise sites are experiencing. There is nothing we can do with our local installation to reduce or eliminate the delay. The good news is that Novell assures us that the delay is eliminated in Service Pak 1 (SP1); the bad news is that Novell has just announced that release of SP1 is being slipped from Q1 (Jan to Mar) to Q2 (Apr to Jun). That means that we may not see it until May, or even June. We were originally expecting SP1 just after the New Year.
Options for users with older, unsupported browsers.
There are now three ways to access GroupWise e-mail using a browser (the web interface). You can see each option when you follow the GroupWise link from the LCC home page. While working on campus, most staff use the "client" version of GroupWise. When working from home or while traveling, staff use the web interface.
The newest version of GroupWise is available as the "graphic interface." We recommend this for staff with newer computer systems and a fast Internet connection. The next two options are for staff with older computer systems and/or slower connections. This latter group experiences performance problems when they try to use the "graphic interface." The "text interface" is a very stripped down implementation of GroupWise 7. The GroupWise 6.5 interface is intended for those who have no other option. Our recommendation is try each interface and see which one works best for your individual circumstances.
Also, note, we are told that Windows computers may have difficulty displaying the webpage properly if the resolution isn't set high enough. A 1068 x 768 resolution works better than an 800 x 600 setting. This would probably be true for Macs as well. Please call the helpdesk if you need assistance with setting your screen resolution.
Suggested Browsers for using Groupwise 7 Webmail
- Mac OS 9.2.2
-- Will NOT properly work with Internet Explorer 5.2.2
-- WILL somewhat work with Internet Explorer 5.1.7. The logout button will still be "jumbled," but you can just quit the browser to log out. There are some other jumbled places.
-- WILL work with Netscape 7.02 (download from Netscape at http://browser.netscape.com/ns8/download/archive70x.jsp )
- Mac OS 10.2 (Jaguar)
-- Will NOT properly work with Safari or I.E.
-- WILL work with Firefox (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox)
- Mac OS 10.3.9 and above
-- Most browsers work (make sure you've run all the OS X software updates); recommended that you use Safari or Firefox, as I.E. for the Mac hasn't been developed for OS X and is NOT supported by Microsoft any longer.
- Windows 2000 and XP
-- Works with the current version of Internet Explorer (6.0 with Service Pack 2) and with Firefox 1.5. If you are having difficulties with these browsers, you can download the latest version of Java software as this may help. (download from Sun at http://java.sun.com)
- Windows 95, 98, and Millennium edition
-- Has been tested with Millenium and Firefox. (http://www.mozilla.com/firefox)
