Cheers for the Florence Center whose float won the Mayor's Award and the 2nd Place in judging for commercial floats in the Rhody Days parade. "Being in the parade turned out to be a lot of fun and a great team building experience for our campus," said Mary Jeanne Kuhar, new dean of the Florence campus. "We learned about the varied and impressive talents our students, staff and instructors possess and we really got to know each other last week--especially on Saturday, building the float, and Sunday, putting the flowers on the float and being in the parade." One of our students, Lorra Jones, winner of a Ford Foundation Scholarship, handed out blue beads to kids along the parade route and told them they were 'study beads.' The students also spoke to a lot of community folks along the route and encouraged them to come to LCC.
The float emphasized LCC’s connection to the community. The college center opened in 1976 and has been offering the community many different types of courses since then, something for everyone. Students on the float represent our healthcare programs (Nursing and Medical Office Assisting) and also transfer courses for associate or bachelor’s degrees. Adult learners have a lot of options in community learning and Outward Ventures. We welcome Joseph Calbreath from KMTR in Eugene who has been a teacher in the Outward Ventures programs.
