Legacy Voices: Educational Giving Opportunities That Work for Donors and Students

David SullivanIt took a battle with colon cancer for David Sullivan to find his planned giving opportunity with the LCC Foundation.

While hospitalized in 2003, Sullivan got to know a group of student nurses from Lane Community College. "I was very impressed with the quality of the students and the way they went about their work," he recalls.

Given a 40 percent chance of surviving his disease, Sullivan set up a charitable bequest to create a scholarship endowment for Lane nursing students. "I wanted to give money to students who could really use it," Sullivan explains.

When Sullivan beat the odds and recovered from his illness, the Foundation worked with him to create an endowment with current funds so that he could continue giving and living life to its fullest.

Today the David Sullivan Nursing Scholarship has helped 16 nursing students achieve their dreams. Sullivan's planned gift will someday increase the endowment and the number of students who benefit each year. Sullivan, a computer support specialist, stresses the fact that it doesn’t take a personal fortune to become a donor. It just takes a desire to give.
